The Devil's Gold Mines

Java, Indonesia

The acrid fumes of Kawah Ijen clawed at my throat, a constant reminder of the harsh reality of life here. As darkness descended, miners began their perilous descent into the crater. They braved the toxic air and treacherous terrain, driven by necessity, to extract the valuable sulfur. Witnessing their arduous work, the sheer physical toll it took, was a sobering experience. I documented their job, a testament to their resilience in the face of incredibly challenging conditions. These images are not just about the beauty of this site, but a stark portrayal of the sacrifices these miners make to provide for their families, a glimpse into a world where survival depends on facing the volcano's fury.
